Beat the heat with Mango Lassi

Mango-LassiMy Punjabi in-laws may have been a hot-headed bunch but they knew a thing or two about keeping cool in extreme heat. Today Toronto is experiencing record-breaking temperatures – Record-breaking heat reached in Toronto – CityNews – and as I pulled out the big guns in my battle to avoid spontaneous human combustion, the thought crossed my mind that I should share my remedy. So, for those of you willing to give it a go, here’s my recipe for Mango Lassi.

I’m a lazy cook so I make it in the glass as I want it. You can use fresh mango, but for the authentic taste they need to be the sweet, yellow Pakistani ones, not the hard green Mexican ones. I don’t have a blender here in Canada so I just buy the tins of mango pulp from the Punjabi grocery store. They’re just as good.

Pakistani mangoes

You will need:

1 cup of mango pulp
1 cup of plain yogurt
1 cup of milk
1 tablespoon of sugar

You can adjust how much milk you put in to get the consistency you prefer. I don’t like it too thick. Some people add crushed ice. Experiment and see what appeals to you. But I guarantee you, nothing will cool you on a hot day like a glass of lassi.

  1. Delicious, but we don’t have the sweet Pakistanis or the hard Mexican mangoes! We have our own Jamaican mangoes – and the season is nearly over!!

  2. I LOVE anything with mangos in it! And I agree – nothing better on a hot day than a mango lassi (except I’ve been calling it a mango smoothie!)!! I like adding some lime juice to mine. Thanks for sharing your recipe – I’ve never thought to add salt, but I think I might try that next time I make some!

    • Give it a whirl – I used to drink it in the summer in the UK and feel cold afterwards! Here, it keeps my body temperature just the right side of bearable. You can add salt or ground cardamom to taste too 🙂 And yes, there’s always hope. Good to hear from you Jane.
